• Annual General Meeting

    Sixteen members gathered in St Wilfrid's Church Hall on Monday 25th June for the club's Annual General Meeting.

    Opening the meeting, the Chairman welcomed everyone and paid tribute to the committee members who had worked hard throughout the past season to ensure that everything ran smoothly and successfully. Wearing his competition secretary's hat, he went on to report that competition entries were slightly lower than last season's figure and the number of members participating over all the competitions was down by 4% from the previous season.

    Programme Secretary, Joan Taylor, reviewed the various events that had taken place over the past season, including competitions, talks, workshops, outdoor shoots and the inter-club competitions. She then outlined the programme being planned for the coming season including our involvement in the Southern Counties Photographic Federation's print and PDI leagues

    This was followed by Andrew Kendon's treasurers report and the acceptance of the 2017/18 audited balance sheet together with approval of the appointment of our auditor for 2018/19 - Paul Robinson. Despite a small fall in revenue over the past year, he proposed that the club should maintain members' subscriptions at their current rates. This was passed unanimously.

    The Chairman then announced that Debbie Platt would be standing down from the committee to spend more time in her holiday home in Spain. She was thanked by the Chairman on behalf of all the members for her contribution to the club over the past six years. The remaining committee members were re-elected unopposed.

    The Chairman then asked all members present to choose their favourite theme, of the six short listed, for next season's set subject competition. Following a show of hands, "Water" was the overwhelming favourite.

    There followed an interesting and wide-ranging discussion about the recent decline in members attending club meetings, the possible causes of this and the difficulty the club has in retaining new members. A clear view was expressed that the club pays insufficient attention to supporting less experienced new members who may lack confidence and feel overwhelmed by the quality of pictures on show during competitions. To counter this trend, a mentor system was suggested as a way of providing one-to-one support to new members to help them find their feet and gain photographic confidence. It was also felt that promoting this message through the greater use of social media, including Facebook, might encourage new comers as well as bringing the club to the attention of amateur photographers and potential members living locally.

    PHOTO BOARD COMPETITION

    Prior to the AGM. members had been invited to submit entries for this new competition, comprising of a panel of any number of prints displayed on a sheet of A1 size board.

    On the day, ten boards were on display, covering a variety of interesting themes and subjects, and members were invited to view and vote for their favourites. Following the count, the result was as follows: In third place came Dave Johnson's board entitled "SHUTTERFLY". Second place came Joan Taylor's board featuring the many thatched properties in Selsey. However, the winner was Andrew Kendon's board composed of colourful pictures of street art from around the world.

    Thus concluded another successful season and AGM. All that remained was for the Chairman to remind everyone about the following important club dates:

    • Presentation Dinner (Monday 9th July)

    • Summer Exhibition (22nd to 27th August)

    • Welcome Evening on Monday 3rd Sept - Members' 10 Minute Presentations !
