Selsey Camera Club

Online PDI Competition No.9

By Tony Storey, Feb 20 2021 03:47PM

During this prolonged Covid-19 closure of the club, it was decided last year to hold a series of online digital competitions in order to keep our members involved with the club as well as maintaining their interest in photography.

Following some helpful recommendations from our members, we decided to look into the possibility of booking an external judge for occasional online competitions, rather than asking members to judge one another’s pictures as often happened in the past. I am therefore delighted to report that we managed once again to secure the services of Mr Tim West FRPS, a judge who is very well known to our members following numerous visits to the club over many years, as both judge and speaker.

On this occasion, it was decided to make this a monochrome competition, and by the entry deadline, forty-eight images had been submitted by ten club members, covering a very wide range of subjects. The entries were duly sent off to Tim along with the appropriate software to enable him to be seen in a video along with each image, giving his feedback plus a mark out of twenty.

Once Tim had completed and returned this material, a YouTube link was subsequently sent out to all the members along with a summary of the marks. It was certainly very interesting to view the video, which lasted just over one hour. Tim certainly provided some very helpful feedback on all the images, frequently commenting on technical aspects including lighting, exposure and composition, but also the things he found interesting as well as a picture’s story-telling qualities.

In equal third place, each with a score of 18 marks, came:

PRIORITY KEEPING DRY by Dave Johnson,

THE SHARD by David Richardson,

THE WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL by Tony Storey

In equal second place, each with a score of 19 marks, came:

WORKING HANDS by Joan Taylor

and

FACE TO FACE by David Richardson

In first place with a score of 20 marks, came:

ELECTRICITY AND WATER DON'T MIX by Pony Moore LRPS

Congratulations to all the members who entered images and participated in this ninth online competition, and very well done to Pony Moore for his intriguing picture of water droplets cascading down onto a light bulb.

Our grateful thanks also to Tim West for giving us his time to carefully consider each of the forty-eight images and providing our members with some very helpful comments and suggestions for improvement.

I felt the overall standard of entry was very impressive and it was certainly a pleasure viewing them all. As you know, we would love to hear from any of our members with ideas and suggestions for future versions of this competition.
